About Me

Headshot of Karen Jackson

I’m Karen Jackson, an independent podcast producer and writer. In 2017, I launched A Long Look: Slow Art at the National Gallery in which I take listeners through the experience of slowing down to view a work of art. I describe the work, the details that emerge and the questions that come up. Then I provide the history, mystery or controversy about the work or the artist.

As the enthusiastic response to A Long Look grew, I saw the potential for podcasting to help museums reach new and diverse audiences and provide an experience beyond their walls. Feedback from low-vision audience members showed how the verbal descriptions in each episode could reach and engage this audience, which is often underserved. As a result of the podcast, the National Gallery of Art hired me as a freelance verbal description writer.

Some Background

After earning an art history degree from Rutgers University, I pivoted to a career in graphic design. For more than 20 years, I worked for design studios, PR firms, and in-house art departments, designing for clients ranging from neighborhood restaurants to Fortune 500 companies. Working for others and eventually running my own freelance business, Kjacks Design, taught me the value of building strong client relationships through respectful listening and reliable client service.

I started Long Look Productions to help Washington DC-area museums find their voice. Let’s talk about how my experience can help you tell your stories.
